Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a highly contagious respiratory virus that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts. First identified in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, the same group of viruses that includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza virus.

Despite being a relatively recent discovery, studies suggest that HMPV has been circulating in human populations for decades, causing seasonal outbreaks, particularly in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals (van den Hoogen et al., 2001).

HMPV infections often present symptoms similar to the common cold or influenza, but in severe cases, the virus can lead to pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

Given its potential to cause significant respiratory illness, HMPV is an important public health concern. Understanding its causes, symptoms, and preventive measures is crucial in managing its spread and impact.

Causes of HMPV Infection

HMPV is transmitted primarily through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces, making it highly contagious in crowded settings…
